Redalyc has based the publication of the content of the journals indexed in its system, in XML JATS format. This format, among other advantages, allows for the creation of different reading products. This includes: PDF, HTML & ePUB.

These products are created automatically from the tagging process using the XML JATS Tagging System, These products are created automatically from the tagging process using the XML JATS tagging system, called Marcalyc. Specialized style sheets are used for each of them that allows to interpret the stored content in the XML JATS and give it output with preferred styles and, In this way, create a standard reading product, with the identification of the journal and with the necessary specifications of a scientific publication.

Some of the main characteristics of these reading products (PDF, HTML, ePUB), generated by Marcalyc, the following are mentioned:

  • The automatic generation without the need to use a specialized layout for each article and for each product (economize time and costs).
  • The inclusion of metadata taken directly from the article’s content, which makes it easier its adequate recovery through the information search engine.
  • The reuse of these reading formats on the journal’s website, either through the traditional download or by using Plugin for OJS incorporated to Marcalyc, immediately and without requiring the layout of a complete fascicle.

With the ePUB format, besides the mentioned characteristics, it should be pointed out that they are configured in such a way that they are accepted by international validators, such as EPUB Validator and EPUB 3.2 – W3C,, systems that verify the presence of international standards for the elaboration of ePUB formats.
